Shubman Gill is unwell and may not play in India’s 2023 World Cup opening match against Australia.

It was announced on Friday morning that Shubman Gill, the top opener for India, could not be able to play in the World Cup opener against Australia on Sunday owing to sickness. As India gets ready to begin their campaign in Chennai, Gill, who has excelled in one-day internationals this year, amassing 1,230 runs from 20 matches at an amazing average of 72.35, will be closely watched. He apparently had dengue, thus his participation in the key game was in doubt until he recovered.
Two days before India’s debut game against Australia on Sunday, head coach Rahul Dravid has at last offered an update on Gill’s health. While Dravid did not explicitly rule out Gill’s potential participation, he also did not affirm that the youthful opener would be eligible for the Australia encounter.
“He’s certainly feeling better today,” Dravid said during a press conference.
“The medical team is monitoring on daily basis. We have 36 hours, we’ll see what decision they take. He’s certainly feeling better today.”
When pressed further, Dravid stated that Gill will continued to be monitored. “Medical team hasn’t ruled him out as yet.

“We’ll keep monitoring him on a day to day basis. We’ll see how he feels day after tomorrow,” Dravid said.
In the fifty-over format this year, Gill has been one of India’s best players; in addition to leading the team in runs scored, the teenager also led the competition in runs scored at the Asia Cup last month, scoring 302 runs in six innings. In the competition, he scored two fifty-scores and a century.
Ishan Kishan may move up to the top of the order if Gill is unable to play in the match on Sunday, starting the Indian batting order with Rohit Sharma.
