Sandro Tonali: The Italian soccer federation suspended Newcastle midfielder Sandro for 10 months on Thursday for betting on teams he played for, keeping him out of the rest of the Premier League season as well as Italy’s participation in next year’s European Championship. Sandro’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, has admitted that his client has a gambling issue and that Sandro informed authorities that while he played for AC Milan and Brescia, he bet on them. Following an investigation by prosecutors in Turin into soccer players using illegal websites to gamble on games, the federation took action.

Sandro’s suspension means he won’t be allowed to compete in Euro 2024, which takes place from June 14 to July 14. Italy, the defending champion, has failed to qualify. Tonali’s collaboration with authorities resulted in a significantly lowered minimum ban of three years for players betting on soccer events.
Sandro was suspended for 18 months, according to FIGC President Gabriele Gravina, however eight of those months were commutable by undergoing gambling addiction treatment and making at least 16 public appearances at centers for young soccer players and associations for recovering addicts.
“We can’t just think about punishing the boys and not helping them recover,” she said. “I think it’s worth a lot more, rather than a month ban—eight months of giving talks about what they went through, in an honest way and with the right behaviour.”
Juventus midfielder Nicol Fagioli was banned for seven months last week after agreeing to a plea bargain with the federation that also required him to undergo gambling addiction therapy. Tonali joined Newcastle in an offseason transfer from Milan, and the Italy international signed a five-year contract with the English club.
Tonali, according to Newcastle manager Eddie Howe, is “committed to him long-term” despite the gambling situation. Tonali and Aston Villa’s Nicol Zaniolo were both returned to their clubs earlier this month when police arrived at Italy’s national team training camp to officially tell them of their involvement in the Turin investigation. Zaniolo has stated that he does not gamble.
