On November 19, 2023 (IST), the prestigious beauty contest Miss Universe 2023 was held in the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador. Miss Nicaragua Sheynnis Palacios was crowned this year’s winner. Nicaragua had won the championship for the first time.
The 72nd Miss Universe pageant made history by shattering decades-old stereotypes and embracing inclusiveness and representation. The most recent edition had a varied field of contenders, including a plus-sized model, two moms, two transgender persons, the first Pakistani and the first Black Miss Spain.
Pakistan competed in Miss Universe for the first time
Miss Universe 2023 marked the first time that our neighbor, Pakistan, competed in the competition. Erica Robin, a 24-year-old model, represents the country on the world beauty scene. She was also named one of the top 20 contestants out of more than 80 countries. Erica was crowned Miss Universe Pakistan in September 2023.
Erica Robin competed in the swimsuit round wearing a ‘burkini’
During the swimsuit round, Erica Robin made a big statement. For the next round, the model was seen wearing a ‘burkini’. She was dressed in a baby pink kaftan with a shimmering ruffled collar.
Erica made a strong yet elegant statement in the competition by foregoing traditional bikinis in favor of something more comfy and appropriate for her country’s customs. As soon as Erica went onto the ramp, the audience erupted in applause.

Miss Pakistan Erica Robin faced criticism for competing in Miss Universe
Erica Robin, Miss Pakistan, has earned a lot of love from people all around the world and from her own country. However, her participation in the prestigious competition was received with harsh criticism from Pakistan’s orthodox sect. In response to this criticism, Erica informed BBC, “It feels great to represent Pakistan. But I don’t understand where the backlash is coming from. I think it is this idea that I would be parading in a swimsuit in a room full of men.”

Erica Robin is from a Christian household and lives in Karachi, Pakistan. She debuted as a professional model in 2020, and she also appeared in an issue of Diva Magazine Pakistan same year. She stated that she was honored and humbled to be the first Miss Universe Pakistan winner. She stated: “I am honoured and humbled to be the first ever Miss Universe Pakistan, and I want to highlight the beauty of Pakistan. We have a beautiful culture that the media is not talking about, Pakistani people are very generous, kind and hospitable. On top of that, I would like to invite everyone to visit my country and try the most sumptuous Pakistani cuisines and explore our enchanting nature, our snow-capped mountains, our greeneries and our progressive landscapes.”
This year’s Miss Universe beauty contest made history by included Pakistan for the first time in its 72 editions. Erica Robin represented Pakistan at the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, which was held on November 19 at the Jose Adolfo Pineda Arena in San Salvador, El Salvador (according to IST).
