To commemorate the 140th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the United Kingdom and South Korea, King Charles and Queen Camilla threw a lavish banquet. The King lavished admiration on K-pop.
King Charles and Queen Camilla of the British Royal Family hosted a lavish banquet at Buckingham Palace on November 21, 2023, to honor South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol and First Lady Kim Keon Hee’s state visit to the United Kingdom. The K-pop girl group BLACKPINK, as well as British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, were among the about 170 distinguished invitees.
The King himself greeted and praised the four Korean glam girls, Jisoo, Jennie, Lisa, and Rose. BLACKPINK attended the South Korea-UK state banquet as COP 26 ambassadors and advocates of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Every member of the K-pop trio looked absolutely stunning in their regal dresses.

King Charles praised BLACKPINK for spreading the message of environmental sustainability to a worldwide audience
With an address in Korean, King Charles greeted his guests for the evening. He mentioned South Korea’s environmental aspirations and lauded the partnership between South Korea and the United Kingdom. King Charles also lauded Korea’s younger generation for their inspiring sustainability efforts and praised BLACKPINK’s work. He went on to say, “I applaud Jennie, Jisoo, Lisa and Rose, better known collectively as BLACKPINK, for their role in bringing the message of environmental sustainability to a global audience as Ambassadors for the U.K.’s Presidency of COP 26, and later as advocates for the U.N. Sustainable Development Goals. I can only admire how they can prioritise these vital issues, as well as being global superstars.”
King Charles apologized for not creating ‘Gangnam Style’ in 1992
In his speech, King Charles also mentioned that the previous time he visited Seoul, he did not develop much of ‘Gangnam Style,’ a song by K-pop idol Psy. He was referring to his 1992 visit to South Korea’s capital with the late Princess Diana. He stated, “Sadly, when I was in Seoul all those years ago, I am not sure I developed much of what might be called the Gangnam Style!”

Squid Games and BTS were mentioned by King Charles
The King called Korea’s’remarkable journey’ and ‘artistic innovation’ a marvel. He compared James Bond to Netflix’s thriller K-Drama, Squid Game, and The Beatles to the South Korean boy band, BTS. He stated, “Korea has matched Danny Boyle with Bong Joon-ho, James Bond with Squid Game and the Beatles’ ‘Let It Be’ with BTS’s ‘Dynamite’. Our cultures share a remarkable ability to captivate imaginations across the world, transforming a so-called soft power into a shared superpower.”

Big Hit Entertainment founded BTS, often known as the Bangtan Boys, a seven-member South Korean boy band. In July 2017, the moniker became a backronym for Beyond the Scene. To honor their debut on June 13, 2013, they performed “No More Dream” from their debut album 2 Cool 4 Skool on June 12, 2013. They were named New Artist of the Year for the song “No More Dream” at the 2013 Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. The band’s popularity grew with their subsequent albums, Dark & Wild (2014) and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015) and The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016), both of which charted on the Billboard 200 in the United States. At the 2016 Melon Music Awards, The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever won Album of the Year.
