Wrestler Sakshi Malik has stepped down as president of the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) following the election of Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh’s close aide, Sanjay Singh.
Sakshi Malik, a Rio Olympics bronze medalist, announced her retirement from wrestling after Sanjay Singh, a Brij Bhushan supporter, was elected as the new Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) President by the board on Thursday.
Sakshi Malik stated during the press conference that they had sought a female president of the WFI. She went on to say that if a woman were elected president of the WFI, there would be no harassment. Malik went on to say that the next generation of wrestlers will have to keep fighting.
Malik was quoted as saying, “If Brij Bhushan Singh’s business partner and a close aide are elected as the president of WFI, I quit wrestling.” “We have made demands for a female president,” Malik continued. Harassment would not occur if the president were a woman. However, there was no participation by women previously, and as you can see from the list now, not a single woman was awarded a position. We battled with all of our might, but the fight will go on. Wrestlers of the next generation must battle.”
Malik was overcome with emotion as she exited the press conference. Wrestler Vinesh Phogat has stated that they hope for justice despite having low expectations. “There are minimal expectations, but we hope to get justice,” Phogat added. It’s unfortunate that wrestling’s future is unknown. To whom shall we express our sorrow? We’re still fighting.”
