Mariah Carey apparently did not want Bryan Tanaka for Christmas this year. Tanaka, a dancer and creative director, announced on social media on Tuesday that he and the superstar singer had split after seven years together.
“With mixed emotions, I share this personal update regarding my amicable separation from Mariah Carey after seven extraordinary years together,” Tanaka wrote on his verified Instagram account. “Our decision to go our separate ways is mutual, and as we embark on these separate journeys, we do so with profound respect and an overwhelming sense of gratitude for the invaluable time we’ve shared.” The memories we’ve made and the artistic collaborations we’ve done will live on in my heart forever.”
The 40-year-old was a backup dancer on Carey’s “The Adventures of Mimi Tour” in 2006. They reportedly began dating in 2016, had a brief break the following year, and then reunited. Tanaka said nice things about Carey in his statement. “Mariah’s dedication to her family and her commitment to her craft have inspired us during our shared journey,” he wrote in an email. “I want to express my love and appreciation for Mariah and her incredible children, whose warmth and kindness have enriched my life in ways words cannot capture. “Tanaka also requested “understanding, privacy, and respect” during this “sensitive” period.
“The outpouring of love and support from fans has been a beacon of strength, and I am extremely grateful for the encouragement that continues to uplift me,” he wrote in a statement. “I eagerly anticipate continuing my journey, knowing my passion for inspiration, dance, and the creative arts will resonate in the unfolding chapters. “Tanaka’s relationship with Carey was documented in her reality show “Mariah’s World” in 2016.

Mariah went to Harborfields High School in Greenlawn. Mariah Carey made her debut in June 1990 with her self-titled album, Mariah Carey, which debuted at #73 but quickly rose to #1 on August 4, 1990. Her self-titled debut album, released in 1990, went multi-platinum and spawned four consecutive #1 singles: “Vision of Love,” “Love Takes Time,” “Someday,” and “I Don’t Wanna Cry,” earning her Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist. Her 1993 album, Music Box, was certified ten times platinum.
She created music history on September 30, 1995. Her single “Fantasy” from her 1995 Daydream album debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making her the first female artist to do so. Her other Daydream single “One Sweet Day” remained at the top of the charts for 16 weeks.
She is the only artist to have had so many number one singles and albums since The Beatles. With “Heartbreaker,” the first single from her 1999 album Rainbow and her 14th number one single, she became the only artist to top the charts in each year of the 1990s, and with “Heartbreaker” in its 60th week atop the Billboard charts, she surpassed The Beatles’ 59-week record as the only artist with the most cumulative weeks spent atop Billboard’s Hot 100 Singles chart.
