Carles Falcón, a Spanish motorcycle rider, was taken to the hospital in “serious condition” after colliding during the second stage of the Dakar Rally in Saudi Arabia, race officials said in a statement on Monday.
“A fellow entrant who was behind him immediately alerted the organisation, which sent a medical helicopter to extract the injured rider,” the organization said in a statement. “He was in critical condition and was flown to Al Duwadimi Hospital.” More details are expected in the coming hours.”
The incident occurred at kilometer 448 of the stage, according to the statement. Falcón’s team, Twin Trail Racing, stated in a statement that he was “unconscious and without a pulse” following the incident but was resuscitated by physicians. Falcón also suffered a fracture to his C2 vertebrae, which required “urgent surgery,” according to the team.

“Over the next few days, Carles will be kept sedated to control the development of the edema he has suffered in his head,” the statement went on to say. “From the team and family, we appreciate all the messages of support received.” Falcón, who was born in the Catalan city of Tarragona in 1978, has “always been surrounded by motorbikes,” according to Twin Trail, and was a Dakar Rally finisher in 2022.
The Dakar Rally is one of the world’s longest and most difficult endurance races, covering 7,891 kilometers this year from Al Ula to Yanbu in Saudi Arabia. From 1979 to 2007, the Dakar Rally was conducted in Europe and Africa, but it was relocated to South America and then the Middle East in 2020 after the 2008 race was postponed due to security concerns.
The Dakar Rally historically has five major vehicle categories: automobiles, motorcycles, trucks, UTVs, and quad bikes. After finishing ninth on stage two, Carlos Sainz Sr., father of Formula One driver Carlos Sainz Jr., went to the top of the overall vehicle standings. Lucas Cruz, a three-time Dakar winner and co-driver, leads the field by one minute and 51 seconds.
