Missouri abortion activists are throwing support behind a constitutional amendment to restore abortion rights while also allowing the procedure to be restricted in later stages of pregnancy
A Missouri abortion rights group declared on Thursday that it was endorsing a constitutional proposal that would guarantee access to the procedure while permitting limitations in later stages of pregnancy.
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom announced that it is endorsing one of the eleven variants of the proposal that would allow legislators to control or outlaw abortion beyond the point of viability, with an exemption granted for the preservation of the woman’s life and well-being. Supporters include the ACLU of Missouri, local Planned Parenthood affiliates and Abortion Action Missouri.
“Missouri’s cruel and restrictive ban on abortion is tying the hands of doctors and preventing necessary care,” said Dr. Iman Alsaden, an adviser to Missourians for Constitutional Freedom and chief medical officer of Planned Parenthood Great Plains, in a statement. “Today, Missourians are taking a critical step to make their own medical decisions and kick politicians out of the exam room.” The petitions were contested by Republican Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft, which has left them stuck in court for months. The campaign is facing strong opposition in its attempt to place the proposition on the ballot in November. a campaign to thwart any initiative petition that would reinstate abortion in the state was unveiled on Tuesday.

And Missourians for Constitutional Freedom are having financial issues; by the end of 2023, they will have no money in the bank. A Republican opponent’s ballot proposal, which would only permit abortions in situations of rape, incest, or extreme medical circumstances up to embryonic viability, would further complicate the attempt.
