US Open champion Novak Djokovic in floods of tears as he’s given heroes welcome in Serbia homecoming
Djokovic has already won the same number of Grand Slam singles championships as Margaret Court, 24, and his victory at Flushing Meadows was his third major of 2023.
Had he not lost to Carlos Alcaraz in the Wimbledon final, he could have finished the calendar Grand Slam.
And after being serenaded by his devoted fans upon his return to his native Serbia, he began to cry due to his feelings.
Serbia’s national basketball team, which won the silver medal in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup, joined Djokovic on the balcony of the Old Palace in Belgrade.
Djokovic had to be consoled by fellow Serbian athlete Nikola Milutinov as he addressed the boisterous audience.
“This is one of the rare times when I find myself speechless,” he remarked. My childhood fantasy has come true with this.
“Like many members of my generation, I attended to celebrate the prior victories of numerous sports teams, including basketball and water polo.
“This is a tremendous honour for me; it is priceless, and I will never again feel like this.
