Once more, Neeraj Chopra is the talk of the country. The 25-year-old javelin thrower, whose accomplishments have elevated Indian athletics to astounding heights, made history on Sunday night when he won the gold medal at the World Championship in Budapest, Hungary. Chopra, who is already an Olympic champion, an Asian Games gold medalist, and a Commonwealth Games victor, won the final major championship he lacked in his career with panache. Chopra made sure that India will leave the main competition with a gold medal with a throw of 88.17 metres.
Chopra had an unusual experience following the event, demonstrating his degree of maturity both on and off the pitch. After winning the gold medal, a Hungarian woman begged for his autograph. Chopra saw that the woman was requesting a signature on a flag of India. Instead of signing the Indian flag, he graciously declined and signed the woman’s shirt sleeve. Nevertheless, the lady was content.
The incident was filmed in Budapest by journalist Jonathan Selvaraj, whose X (previously known as Twitter) account reads “Sports & stories for Sportstar.” His tweet has already gone viral.
Neeraj has sort of blazed a path. After he achieved success in the javelin throw, the sport of athletics shown tremendous promise. As a result, two additional competitors, Kishore Jena and DP Manu, placed in the top six in the final on Sunday.
The shooting bronze medalist from the 2012 Olympics, Gagan Narang, claimed that the current generation of Indian athletes had undergone a paradigm shift in terms of winning attitude.
