When a Picasso masterpiece is auctioned off this year, it’s anticipated to bring in more than $120 million.
When it is put up for sale this time, a Picasso masterpiece titled “Femme a’ la montre” is anticipated to bring in more than $120 million. The 1932 oil painting, which is 51 1/4* 38 inches in size, shows Marie-Therese Walter, Picasso’s “golden muse” and the subject of many of his well-known portraits.
“Femme à la Montre’ by Picasso is a masterpiece in every way. Picasso’s “annus mirabilis,” which was painted in 1932, is brimming with jubilant, passionate exuberance while yet being well thought out and resolved. According to Julian Dawes, Sotheby’s head of Impressionist & Modern Art for the Americas, “its bold primary colors sing from the five-foot-tall canvas.”

When the late Emily Fisher Landau’s collection is put up for auction in November, the painting will be the centerpiece of the two-day sale at Sotheby’s in New York. It is one of Emily’s 120-painting collection. She was a well-known collector of modern art who passed away earlier this year at the age of 102.
The collection, which is anticipated to fetch more than $400 million, also includes pieces by Mark Rothko, Andy Warhol, Willem de Kooning, and Georgia O’Keeffe. The picture, which dates from one of the artist’s most notable periods, was the focus of an entire exhibition in 2018 that was organized by the Picasso Museum in Paris and the Tate Modern in London.
The narrative underlying the artwork
Picasso and Marie initially crossed paths in Paris in 1927 when Marie was just 17 years old and the artist was still wed to his first wife, Russian-Ukrainian ballet dancer Olga Khokhlova .Marie later served as the model for the artist’s most sought-after works. Picasso’s marriage ended as a result of his growing infatuation with his muse over time. Picasso passed away in 1973, but Marie did not.
Sotheby’s claims that “the sense of release from keeping secrets about his affair seem to have spilled out onto this extraordinary canvas,” in which he “gives full painterly rein to new-found freedoms, drenching the painting in strong primary colors and beautiful forms, while at the same time paying careful attention to every small detail, creating a composition that is both intensely complex and deeply harmonious.”
Picasso’s other pieces that Maire influenced
Picasso’s most bizarre portrait of Walter, in which she is depicted as a tentacled sea monster, sold at Sotheby’s last year for $67.5 million. His other 1932 paintings, “Femme seated near a window (Marie-Thérèse),” and “Nude, Green Leaves and Bust,” were sold for a combined $103.41 million in 2021 and $106.5 million in 2010 respectively.
