According to a recent study, teenage and young adult cancer survivors appear to have a higher likelihood of giving birth to children who have birth defects.
With this knowledge, Caitlin Murphy, the study’s primary author, said that young women making decisions regarding pregnancy and prenatal care should get proper counseling and supervision.

“Concerns like the health of future children are at the top of mind for many young adults diagnosed with cancer, but they are already so overwhelmed at the time of diagnosis with navigating it related information,” said Murphy, an associate professor of health promotion and behavioral sciences at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston.
She further stated in a school news release that “our findings can be used in clinical practice to provide counseling and inform this population about the potential risks and reproductive consequences of it at the time of diagnosis and beyond.”
Babies Born To Moms Who Had Cancer Are More Likely To Have Birth Defects
More than 6,800 children, 12 months and younger, of mothers who were between the ages of 15 and 39 at the time of their diagnosis were screened for birth abnormalities by the researchers.
13% had lymphoma, 29% had thyroid cancer, and over 11% had breast cancer. About one-fourth had undergone chemotherapy.
Despite the fact that the overall probability of any birth abnormality was higher in the offspring of cancer-affected mothers (6% vs. 4.8%), it was still extremely rare in both groups.
Children of women with a history of cancer were more likely to have certain anomalies, such as eye or ear defects, heart and circulation malformations, genital and urinary system abnormalities, and musculoskeletal abnormalities.
According to Murphy, screening newborns for birth abnormalities may offer a chance for focused prevention.
Many studies now show links between cancer and birth defects, and Murphy noted that children who have birth deformities also have a higher risk of developing cancer. “The more we discover about their connections to one another, the more we can identify opportunities to prevent both.”
