BAN Vs NED: On Sunday, October 28th, the Netherlands defeated Bangladesh in the 28th match of the ICC World Cup 2023. Captain Scott Edwards hit another fifty to help the Netherlands post a difficult total of 229 runs when batting first, and then brilliant spells from Bas de Leede and Paul van Meerkeren resulted in an 87-run victory.
Both clubs came into the game with a slim chance of finishing in the top four, having won just one of their first five games. In the first game of the edition, Edwards won the toss and chose to bat first at Kolkata’s famed Eden Gardens.
Taskin Ahmed’s wicket of Vikramjit Singh in the second over gave Bangladesh an early breakthrough, while Soriful Islam’s dismissal of Max O’Dowd in the next over placed the Dutch team under pressure. Wesley Barresi and Colin Ackermann supplied balance with a 59-run third-wicket stand, with the former making 41 runs off 41 balls.
Edwards delivered for his squad once more, scoring 68 runs off 89 balls for his second fifty of the tournament. Sybrand Engelbrecht added 77 runs for the sixth wicket, but Bangladesh bowlers came back late to limit the Netherlands to 229 runs in 50 overs.
Aryan Dutt’s important wicket of Litton Das in the fifth over gave the Netherlands an ideal start, and pace all-rounder Logan van Beek dismissed Tanzid Hasan in the next over to put the Netherlands in command. Bangladesh’s middle order’s troubles continued, with Najmul Shanto and captain Shakib Al Hasan failing to make an impact.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Mahmadullah attempted to balance the game but failed to convert their early beginnings into significant knocks. Mehidy led the way with 35 runs as Bangladesh’s innings ended on 142 runs in 42.2 overs. Paul van Meekeren won the Player of the Match award after taking four wickets for 23 runs, while Bas de Leede took two for the Netherlands.
A win moved the Netherlands up to eighth place in the points standings, while Bangladesh fell to ninth place with only two points after six games.
