Bihar Politics: August 2022 saw Nitish Kumar join the Bihar Mahagathbandhan after severing his connections with the BJP over its alleged attempt to “split” his JD (U).
On Sunday, Bihar’s chief minister, Nitish Kumar, resigned from the Janata Dal (United). A few hours later, he and the Bharatiya Janata Party, which he had quit less than 18 months before, created a new administration.
August 2022 saw Nitish Kumar join the Mahagathbandhan, or grand coalition, after severing his relationship with the BJP on the grounds that it was attempting to “split” his JD (U). With the help of Congress, the three Left parties, and the Rashtriya Janata Dal, which is led by Lalu Prasad Yadav and Tejashwi Yadav, he formed a new administration.
Nitish Kumar claimed on Sunday, January 28, that he left the grand alliance because “things were not working well” for him in the Mahagathbandhan and the opposition INDIA bloc.
In the 243-member Bihar assembly, the BJP and its partners from the NDA have 82 members, while the JD (U) has 45. In order to create a government, a party or coalition needs 122 legislators. There are 114 legislators from the RJD, Congress, and Left parties. With 79 members, the RJD is by far the largest party in the House.
Why did Nitish Kumar dump the NDA?
Formerly the leading partner of Bihar’s NDA, the JD (U) was in decline, lagging behind its junior ally, the BJP. Growing resentful of the BJP, Nitish Kumar held them accountable for the sharp decline in his party’s assembly seat count from 71 in 2015 to 43 in 2020, while the BJP’s count increased from 53 to 74, second only to the RJD’s 75.
According to reports, Nitish Kumar accused the BJP of pressuring Chirag Paswan, the leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), to put up candidates in almost every seat where the JD (U) was running.
In addition, it has been stated that Nitish Kumar did not have the same rapport with deputy chief ministers Tarkishore Prasad and Renu Devi as he did with Sushil Kumar Modi, who was the deputy chief minister for thirteen years.
Why is Nitish Kumar joining the NDA again at this time?
The 72-year-old Nitish Kumar expressed his dissatisfaction with the state of affairs in both the Mahagathbandhan of Bihar and the INDIA alliance, which he assisted in shaping but which did not sufficiently acknowledge his contributions.
“You all know how I came to this alliance and also how I worked to bring together so many parties. But of late, things were not working well. It was not going down well with those in my party as well,” Nitish Kumar told reporters on Sunday.
Nitish Kumar also alluded subtly to the utter silence he had upheld over the political unrest that had swept the state over the previous few days. Following a JD (U) legislature party meeting where he was given authority to make decisions regarding the partnership, he tendered his resignation. Nitish Kumar was asked to serve as acting chief minister until a new administration was established, which finally happened in the evening, according to the Raj Bhavan.
