Cedar Fair and Six Flags merge: The two firms highlight their combined intellectual property partnerships, notably those for DC Comics and Peanuts characters, as key to the merger.
Six Flags and Cedar Fair have agreed to merge, creating a $8 billion parks colossus that the firms think will be able to compete with parks from the Walt Disney Co. and Comcast’s NBCUniversal. The all-stock transaction will combine both firms’ portfolios, resulting in a behemoth with 27 theme parks, 15 water parks, 9 hotels and resorts, safaris, marinas, and other properties spread over the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

Notably, the two companies are emphasizing how combining their licensed IP portfolio will assist them in developing “engaging new attractions.” It has an agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery for the rights to DC Comics and Looney Tunes characters, while It has the Peanuts comic world. The deal comes at a time when both Disney and NBCUniversal are seeing significant growth and earnings in their theme park portfolios.

Both NBCUniversal and Disney are expanding their respective theme park business lines, with Disney investing $60 billion to expand its theme parks in California, Florida, and around the world, and Universal developing a new theme park in Texas and a live Halloween Horror Nights attraction in Las Vegas.

In their merger agreement, Cedar Fair and Six Flag emphasize that by joining, they will have greater geographic diversity, with parks in Florida, California, and other regions of the south able to stay open all year while sites in the northeast and midwest must close for the winter. The combined firm will trade under the ticker code FUN and will operate under the Six Flags brand.
