Kerala News: Veena George, the Health Minister, has ordered a probe. The 4-year-old girl’s relatives claim that the tongue surgery was performed without their consent.
Kerala News: An investigation has been launched after the family of a four-year-old child in Kerala accused Kozhikode Medical College Hospital of gross medical malpractice. According to her relatives, the child went to the hospital to have an extra finger removed from one of her hands but was instead subjected to tongue surgery, reports stated.
According to reports, Kerala Health Minister Veena George has directed that the Director of Medical Education conduct an immediate probe.

According to reports, the girl suffered polydactyly and was admitted to the Kozhikode hospital to have a sixth finger removed from her hand.
“We were advised that it (the sixth finger) could be removed with little surgery, so we consented. When the youngster was wheeled back, we were surprised to see that her mouth was bandaged. We didn’t know what transpired. “When we checked her hand, the sixth finger was still there,” a relative of the youngster told IANS.

The relative continued, “We notified the nurse, and when she heard it, she smiled. We were told that there was also an issue with her tongue, which was resolved. Soon, the doctor arrived and apologized for the mistake, saying the sixth finger would be amputated, and he took the youngster away.
According to a post on Onmanorama.com, hospital officials agreed to the “mistake” of doing the tongue surgery without her family’s consent but said the operation would “benefit” her. According to the story, the kid was also diagnosed with a medical problem known as ‘tongue-tie’, and the doctor on duty chose to operate on her tongue before the sixth finger procedure.
According to Dr. Arun Preet, superintendent of the hospital’s Institute of Maternal and Infant Health, “the child will only benefit from the procedure.” When the doctor discovered the youngster had a tongue tie, he repaired it before doing surgery to remove the sixth finger.

He said, “We acknowledge that there was a communication problem and will look into it.
The child’s family, on the other hand, said there was no problem with her tongue and that the hospital told them it was a mistake since “they had scheduled surgery for two children on the same date.”. According to the Manorama story, the child’s family could file a police complaint to demand action against the alleged neglect.
The hospital had previously faced an investigation after another example of apparent neglect was publicized. The case involves Harshina, a 30-year-old woman who protested last year after discovering that physicians had left a pair of scissors in her belly after a C-section in 2017. According to reports, Harshina wanted justice, claiming she had undergone five years of suffering with the scissors inside her, causing enormous psychological and financial pressure, as her husband was forced to close his business due to her illness.
According to an August 2023 story on Onmanorama.com, an investigation revealed that a pair of medical scissors was left in the woman’s stomach during the surgery, and the district medical board concurred that it was an instance of “medical negligence.”.
