An initial dual kidney transplant was performed at AIIMS Delhi on a dialysis patient who was 51 years of age.
According to the hospital, AIIMS-Delhi completed the first-ever twin kidney transplant on a dialysis patient.
In cooperation with the Organ Retrieval Banking Organization (ORBO), the surgical disciplines and nephrology departments of the AIIMS carried out the procedure.
The donor, a 78-year-old woman, was pronounced brain dead after being taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre on December 19 due to a severe head injury sustained in a fall, according to Dr. Asuri Krishna, an adjunct professor of surgery at the hospital.

Dual Kidney Transplant
He claimed her family approved of the donation of her organs.
The problem was that, due to her advanced age, a patient on dialysis would not have had enough blood from her single kidney. Thus, it was decided to use both kidneys in one recipient, according to Krishna. The beneficiary was a female dialysis patient, 51 years old.
He declared, “She needed a kidney badly.”
Dual Kidney Transplant
The surgery was carried out on December 22 last year by the transplant team of the surgery unit. The doctor said this feat was being shared with the media now as “we wanted to ensure the patient was doing well.”.
In the surgery, both kidneys were placed on the right side of the recipient, one on top of the other, the doctor said.
“The procedure was complex because we had to place two kidneys in a restricted area. Usually, one kidney is transplanted,” Krishna said, adding that the recipient had an uneventful recovery with both kidneys performing well following the surgery.
Dual Kidney Transplant
“This one-of-a-kind surgery is a great example of using limited resources to bridge the huge demand and supply gap that exists for organs in India by using the organs from an elderly donor, which usually would have been rejected,” he said.
The patient has been on follow-up since the surgery took place. She was discharged within three weeks of being operated on, Dr. Krishna said.
“We wanted to ensure the patient was doing well before reporting this dual transplant in the media,” stated the physician.
