Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc., will start producing Chromebook in India, becoming the newest multinational tech giant to increase production in this crucial growing region.
Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai announced Monday on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Google is collaborating with HP Inc. to produce in the South Asian nation. With the help of the move, Google will be able to increase supply in India and more successfully fight against Windows PCs from businesses like Dell Technologies Inc. and Asustek Computer Inc. Another success for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s $2 billion incentive program to persuade global tech firms to establish a manufacturing base in India.

In response to rising tensions between Washington and Beijing, the nation of 1.4 billion people has been building its electronics manufacturing industry. Local production will aid Google in ensuring a steady supply in India and avert any potential import restrictions. Due to their typical cheap prices and narrow profit margins, Chromebooks are particularly vulnerable to any tariff actions.
In order to give producers more time to prepare for future constraints, New Delhi is relaxing its planned restrictions on imports of laptops, tablets, and other IT devices, Bloomberg earlier reported.

In southern India, close to Chennai, at a Flex Ltd. plant where HP has been producing laptops and desktops since 2020, the Chromebooks will be made. According to a statement from HP, production is scheduled to begin on October 2. They are primarily aimed towards the educational market.
