The team that finishes first in their league will face the fourth-placed team in the semi-finals. Pakistan, New Zealand, and Afghanistan are vying to be the third and final team to qualify for the semi-finals, following South Africa and Australia. First, Pakistan will meet England on November 11 in Kolkata, following New Zealand’s eighth match of the tournament against Sri Lanka on November 9. A Kiwi loss combined with a Pakistani win gives the Babar Azam-led side 10 points. This, combined with South Africa likely beating the Afghans in Ahmedabad, will smooth the way for Pakistan to reach the semi-finals. If Afghanistan wins any of their final two games, they will be level on 10 points with Pakistan, and the net run rate (NRR) for both teams will be considered.
The second scenario considers rain disrupting any of the aforementioned matches. Rain in the Pakistan-England game, combined with a Kiwi victory against Sri Lanka, will guarantee the Black Caps a semi-final date with India. Weather causing havoc in the New Zealand match will result in Pakistan qualifying, subject to the outcome of Afghanistan’s two games against Australia and South Africa. By winning any of their two games, the Hashmatullah Shahidi-led side has an excellent chance to strike a surprise and advance in the qualification game.
According to the third scenario, the Afghans are expected to lose both games, while the Kiwis and Pakistan are expected to win against Sri Lanka and England, respectively. In that case, qualifying will be solely contingent on the NRR, with New Zealand (+0.398) now edging out Pakistan (+0.036).
