IND vs. SA: Before the T20 World Cup the following year, players like Tilak Varma, Yashavi Jiswal, and Rinku Singh will have a maximum of five international T20 matches to demonstrate their abilities. The first Twenty20 International between South Africa and India washed out without a ball being bowled. India plays a three-match home series against Afghanistan following the Twenty20 International Series against South Africa.
In the second Twenty20 International against South Africa on Tuesday, the think tank will be praying for sunny skies after a washout in the series opener cost the young Indians trying out for the team crucial playing time.
In Durban, not even the toss could take place on Sunday, and the second game of the three-match series is expected to be rained out. With just five games remaining before the T20 World Cup in June, the management has a very small window of opportunity to try new players.
Currently, selection for the Indian team that is traveling to the USA and the Caribbean will be heavily influenced by performance in the IPL. It is quite improbable that every member of the selectors’ 17-man team will get a chance to play in the series’ last two games.
Suryakumar Yadav, Rinku Singh, and Shubman Gill—who did not play in the T20 series against Australia that followed the World Cup—appear to be the only players locked into the batting order for the ICC tournament six months later.
Ruturaj Gaikwad and Virat Kohli both have experience in the IPL, but unless they both make the World Cup roster, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Rohit Sharma are peripheral players who will need to put up a spectacular display to get into the team. India’s only other World Cup series comes at home against Afghanistan the following month. There are concerns with the timing of India’s T20 commitments prior to the World Cup, as the selectors will be compelled to take into account solely IPL performance for World Cup selection.
Jitesh Sharma is regarded as India’s finisher in the shortest format, much like Rinku. Jitesh will be aiming for playing time against the Proteas after demonstrating promise against Australia. The rookie batting lineup will face a tough test due to the extra bounce on South African surfaces.
Only Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah, who are not participating in this series, are certain picks for the World Cup, meaning that several bowling berths are up for grabs. Due to a personal emergency, Deepak Chahar, who was chosen for his comeback series, is still in India.
After performing well in the T20s against the Australians, Kuldeep Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi both want to continue their strong form into the series. After taking a sabbatical following the World Cup, Ravindra Jadeja has also reconnected with the team.
Similar to India, South Africa has five more games to determine who will make up their World Cup roster. Gerald Coetzee and Marco Jansen, the pace pair, were only selected for the first two games. They’ll get just one appearance now that the series opener has been spoiled before turning their attention to red ball cricket.
