Eligibility criteria for Indian railway hiring
Age limit
As of January 1, 2023, the candidate must be at least 15 years old and not older than 24. For the following categories, the upper age limit is lenient to the extent specified:
- For candidates from SC/ST communities, by five years
- for candidates from OBC communities, by three years
- The age reduction for individuals with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) is 10 years for the Unreserved category, 13 years for OBC, and 15 years for SC/ST.
Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) reservation
EWS candidates are those whose family’s gross annual income is less than Rs. 8.00 Lakh (Rupees Eight Lakhs only) and who are not eligible for reservation under the SC/ST/OBC-NCL scheme.
Educational qualification
The applicant needs to meet the following requirements in terms of education:
- The candidate must have earned at least 50% of the possible points in an approved board’s Matric/10th class exam or its equivalent (under the 10+2 examination system).
- The candidate must possess an ITI in a relevant trade, such as a Provisional Certificate issued by the National Council for Vocational Training or a National Trade Certificate in the notified trade issued by the National Council for Vocational Training.
Selection process of RRR, ECR apprenticeship
For each division/unit, a merit list of candidates will be created by averaging the candidates’ scores from the ITI exam and the Matriculation exam, giving each equal weight. The candidates’ aggregate marks must be at least 50%. Candidates’ marks across all subjects will be taken into account for determining the percentage they received in Class 10, rather than just the marks from a particular subject or set of subjects.
The candidate who is older will be given preference if two candidates have identical scores. If the candidates’ dates of birth coincide, the candidate who cleared the matriculation exam earlier will be given preference.
