In an effort to stop Tehran from supplying drones and weapons to Russia, the UK, France, and Germany have decided to maintain their nuclear sanctions against Iran.
Iran signed a nuclear agreement in 2015, and as part of the conditions, some sanctions were to be eased the next month.
The European countries contend that by enriching and storing uranium, Iran violated the agreement. According to Iran, their action was “illegal and provocative” and “clearly violated” the conditions of the nuclear agreement. According to diplomatic sources in Europe, the decision was motivated not just by a desire to stop Iran from growing economic power but also by a desire to lessen the likelihood that Tehran would transfer ballistic missiles to Russia. Moscow has already purchased many drones from Tehran that were used against Ukraine.
The restrictions, according to the UK, France, and Germany, were put in place “to maintain nuclear proliferation-related sanctions on Iran, as well as arms and missile embargoes.” The “E3” group of European nations declared that their own legislation would be updated to reflect the expiration of UN sanctions. Despite the restrictions, Russia has employed a significant number of drones produced in Iran in its conflict with Ukraine.
Iran with nuclear sanctions
Separately, the UK has issued sanctions against anyone involved in creating and carrying out Iran’s law requiring women to wear the hijab, including the cultural minister and the mayor of Tehran, the country’s capital. The action was taken before Mahsa Amini’s passing was commemorated for the first time. A wave of demonstrations was sparked after she was killed after being detained by morality police for allegedly violating the hijab law.

Iran and the P5+1 (the US, UK, France, China, Russia, and Germany) agreed to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), also known as the nuclear agreement, eight years ago.
According to the 2015 agreement, Iran consented to restrict its delicate nuclear activities and welcome outside inspectors in exchange for the easing of punishing economic sanctions. The agreement forbids the transfer, sale, or purchase of drones or missiles to or from Iran.
Iran with nuclear sanctions
The accord called for the remaining nuclear and ballistic missile sanctions against Iran to be withdrawn on a “transition day” eight years later. An asset freeze was also part of the penalties against a list of people and organizations thought to be supporting the nuclear development. If nations like Russia and China do not enact sanctions akin to those of the UK, France, and Germany before 18 October, the limits will no longer apply to them. According to the E3, the sanctions would continue until Tehran was “fully compliant” with the agreement.
The E3’s responsibilities under the JCPOA and UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which forbids Iran from engaging in any activity related to ballistic missiles built to be able to deliver nuclear weapons, were “clearly” violated, according to Iran, which claimed the judgment. The E3 claimed that because Iran had “refused opportunities to return to the JCPOA twice” and had “continued to expand its program beyond JCPOA limitations and without any credible civilian justification,” the decision was in accordance with the JCPOA. In 2018, Donald Trump unilaterally pulled the US out of the JCPOA.

Separate from the 2015 nuclear agreement, Iran and the US came to an informal accord whereby Iran promised not to enrich its uranium over 60% and to free five American nationals who were detained there. It is anticipated that in exchange, the US will release five Iranian prisoners jailed in the US as well as $6 billion in Iranian assets kept in South Korea via Qatar.
