The upcoming movie ‘Mission Raniganj’ is based on a true story that happened in the Raniganj coalfield and was motivated by Late Shri Jaswant Singh Gill’s bravery in leading Bharat’s coal mine rescue mission.
According to the producers, the upcoming movie was “inspired by a true story at the Raniganj coalfield and inspired by the heroic act of Late Shri Jaswant Singh Gill who led Bharat’s coal mine rescue mission.The motion poster for “Mission Raniganj” with the tagline “The Great Bharat Rescue” was posted online by the film’s creators on Wednesday. The Hindi film’s title was revealed in the midst of the ongoing India-Bharat naming debate.
A press release from the production company Pooja Entertainment stated that “the heroic Jaswant Singh Gill played a significant role in rescuing all the remaining miners trapped inside a flooded coal mine in Raniganj in November 1989, which was a successful rescue mission in Bharat against all odds.
Jaswant Singh Gill, a mining engineer, will be played by Akshay. Gill, an Amritsar local, had won various honors for his valorous deed in 1989. By volunteering, he helped 64 people escape a mine in West Bengal’s Raniganj district. At the age of 80, Gill passed away in 2019.

Mission Raniganj’s cast is completed by Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, Pavan Malhotra, Ravi Kishan, Varun Badola, Dibyendu Bhattacharya, Rajesh Sharma, Virendra Saxena, Shishir Sharma, Ananth Mahadevan, Jameel Khan, Sudhir Pandey, Bachan Pachera, Mukesh Bhatt, and Omkar Das Manikpur.
The production was made under the direction of “Rustom” director Tinu Suresh Desai, who also starred Akshay in it.
What Is the Real Mission Raniganj Story?
East India Company employees John Sumner and Suetonius Grant Heatly made the discovery of the Raniganj Coalmine in 1774. The mine is situated in the West Bengali Paschim Bardhaman district, in the Asansol and Durgapur subdivisions. The two men received a permit from Lord Warren Hastings to begin mining coal there, and so coal mining in India got its start. Alexander & Co. started regular mining at Raniganj in 1820, and for most of the 19th and 20th centuries, Raniganj was the nation’s top coal producer.
Mining was done in a hasty fashion back then. At the time, there were no pillars to hold the mine’s walls and ceilings, and every coal vein had been mined to the point of exhaustion.
To tear down coal barriers, the miners set off a series of explosives on November 13, 1989. The explosion caused the mine structure to tremble, and a nearby wall in an underground space cracked. Six miners perished as a result of the water coming in due to this breach. The 65 miners who were inside the lift became stuck, but those who were close to it were lifted up to safety. It was difficult to rescue the trapped miners because the water level was increasing swiftly and the mine structure was unstable.
A young and courageous mine engineer from IIT Dhanbad, Yashwant Singh Gill, saved the day when everyone else had given up hope.
Gill dug a brand-new borehole and dropped a six-foot-tall, 21-inch-diameter iron capsule inside of it. He raised each of the 65 miners one by one after lowering and lifting the capsule with a 12-tonne crane. Over 2,000 people observed Gill’s 6-hour-long rescue effort while it was conducted.
Gill describes an experience that is impossible to describe after the last of the miners was saved. Coal India observes Rescue Day on November 16 every year to honor Gill and his bravery. The Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak was given to him for his bravery by Ramaswamy Venkataraman, the then-President of India.
The movie Mission Raniganj’ Starring Akshay Kumar Will Premiere On October 6, which will be released across the country on October 6, 2026, features Akshay Kumar, Parineeti Chopra, Kumud Mishra, and Ravi Kishan in the key roles. The story of a real-life hero being told on the big screen will be fascinating.
