Since the Dobbs ruling struck down the constitutional right to an abortion, a growing number of young men and women have made the decision that they will never want to have children, according to a recent survey of sterilization.
Researchers report April 12 in the journal JAMA Health Forum that after the June 2022 ruling by the U.S. Supreme Court overturning Roe v. Wade, the number of young adults choosing to get permanent sterilization jumped drastically across the country.
Researchers discovered that the rate of tubal sterilizations among young women was twice as high as the rate of vasectomies among young men.

Permanent Sterilization
Lead researcher Jacqueline Ellison stated, “The significant difference in patterns between these two procedures likely reflects the fact that young women are overwhelmingly responsible for preventing pregnancy and disproportionately experience the health, social, and economic consequences of abortion bans.” She teaches health policy and administration as an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Public Health.
According to the researchers, this is the first study to evaluate how Dobbs affects young people’s decisions about permanent contraception.
National medical record data from academic medical centers shows that, prior to Dobbs, rates of permanent sterilization among individuals aged 18 to 30 were gradually rising at a rate of 2.8 per 100,000 person-months for women and 1 per 100,000 person-months for men.
However, the rate increased by 58 procedures per 100,000 person-months for women and 27 procedures per 100,000 person-months for men following the Supreme Court’s ruling, according to the data.
The research team stated in a university news release that “the abrupt increase in permanent contraception rates may indicate a policy-induced change in contraceptive preferences.” “Dobbs might have additionally heightened a feeling of urgency among those who were interested in permanent contraception before the decision.”
Researchers discovered that whereas the number of tubal sterilizations for women increased over time, the number of vasectomies performed on men did not.
The results are remarkable since, according to Ellison, tubal ligation treatments are two to six times more expensive and significantly more involved than vasectomies.
