According to news agency PTI, the Trinamool Congress has filed a complaint with the Election Commission, charging Varanasi-based BJP candidate Prime Minister Narendra Modi with breaking the model code of conduct by utilizing federal funds for campaigning. TMC Rajya Sabha MP Derek O’Brien claimed in a letter addressed to the chief election commissioner on Monday that on March 16, following the adoption of the model code of conduct, the voters received a message from the prime minister outlining his government’s initiatives.

“The BJP released the aforementioned letter under the pretense of a communication purportedly from the Indian government, using the prime minister’s office to do so at the expense of the public coffers. In the complaint, O’Brien stated, “Such widespread distribution is nothing more than an appeal to the voters in support of the BJP and Mr. Modi, thereby flouting the mandate of the Election Commission of India.”
O’Brien implored the electoral body to make sure that the BJP and PM Modi, their candidate, desist from using public funds for campaigning in the future and to take down the letter. Additionally, he recommended that the expenses incurred in sending the prime minister’s letter to voters be included in the election expenditure records of the BJP and Modi.
“BJP’s filthy tricks are destroying institutions like ECI,” said O’Brien on Tuesday, calling for the Supreme Court to oversee the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Is the BJP so afraid of the public that they are using ECI as a party office to attack Oppn? HMV or ECI? Officers of elected state governments are being transferred! for fair and free elections.”
