Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, celebrated Diwali with his family by burning diyas at his home and attending an aarti ceremony at a temple. S. Jaishankar, the MEA, also gave him unique gifts.
Diwali is celebrated with great zeal and delight all across the world. To commemorate the festival of lights, Indians all over the world dressed up in festive apparel and lit up their homes with diyas and lamps. Among all the festivities, one of the highlights for us was Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s simple yet magnificent celebrations with his family.

Rishi Sunak, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, celebrated Diwali 2023 with quiet festivities at his residence
Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, took to Instagram to remember his Diwali festivities in 2023. He captioned his image with a message of well wishes and said how special it was to experience the festival of lights with his family at 10 Downing Street in London. He wrote, “A special moment for me to be celebrating Diwali with my family on the steps of No.10. Happy Diwali to everyone celebrating here in the UK and around the world!”

Rishi Sunak is shown with his adored wife, Akshata Murty, and daughters, Krishna and Anoushka, lighting diyas outside their home. His girls wore vivid traditional outfits, while Akshata Murty wore a beautiful, minimalistic blue saree.

Rishi Sunak, the British Prime Minister, was spotted with his family at the Vedic Society Hindu Temple for an aarti ritual
Following the celebrations at their house, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was seen taking part in Diwali festivities at his hometown of Southampton. He went to the Vedic Society Hindu Temple on Radcliffe Road with his family for their aarti ceremony.
During the ritual, the Prime Minister, his wife Akshata Murty, his two daughters, and his parents lit lights and prayed alongside the believers. Rishi Sunak spoke to, “It is wonderful to be back home in Southampton. I have so many happy memories of my time here as a kid. This was the place where the values my parents raised me with were reinforced, the importance of family, faith and service, education and hard work. Looking around, I’m inspired there is a whole new generation raised with those same values.”

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife, Akshata Murty, in 10 Downing Street on November 12, 2023. During the meeting, Jaishankar sent Diwali greetings on behalf of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
S. Jaishankar arrived with his wife, Kyoko Jaishankar, and presented the British Prime Minister with an idol of Lord Ganesha as well as a cricket bat autographed by batsman Virat Kohli. Jaishankar posted images from the meeting to his X (previously Twitter) account. He captioned the post as follows, “Delighted to call on Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Diwali Day. Conveyed the best wishes of PM Narendra Modi. India and the UK are actively engaged in reframing the relationship for contemporary times. Thank Mr and Mrs Sunak for their warm reception and gracious hospitality.”
