Novak Djokovic did not have a single break point against Jannik Sinner, a first for him in a Grand Slam match.
Novak Djokovic was looking for a record-extending 11th Australian Open victory and 25th major overall, maintaining his perfect 10-0 record in the semifinals and finals. Furthermore, the Serb had not lost a match at Melbourne Park since a fourth-round defeat in 2018, a streak that lasted 2195 days and included 33 straight victories at the season’s first major. However, the 36-year-old’s amazing streak was ended by Jannik Sinner on Friday at the Rod Laver Arena, as the Italian advanced to his first Slam final.
Following the devastating loss, Djokovic told the media that it was his worst-ever performance in a Grand Slam match, admitting that he was taken aback by himself.
“He deserves to be in the finals. “He totally outplayed me,” Djokovic remarked. “Look, I was astonished by my level—in a negative manner. I didn’t do much correctly in the first two sets. Yeah, this is probably one of the worst Grand Slam matches I’ve ever played. At least, that’s what I remember.
The most important feature of Sinner’s victory was that Djokovic did not have a chance at a break point, which is the first time that has happened in a Grand Slam match.
“That stat says a lot,” Djokovic explained. “First and foremost, he was serving with accuracy and precision, and he was backing up his serve really effectively. There are a lot of bad things I’ve done on the court today in terms of my game that I’m not particularly satisfied with, such as movement, forehand, and backhand. “Everything was just subpar.”
The 23-year-old broke early and late in both of the first two sets, taking a 2-0 lead in just an hour and 13 minutes, before Djokovic fought off match points in the third set to make a late push after winning the tie-break. Sinner broke early in the fourth set, capturing five straight games from 40-0 down to take a 3-1 lead before serving for the win.
