Sonali Bendre, a prominent Bollywood actress, has discussed the beauty standards prevailing in the 1990s. She stated in an interview with Bollywood Bubble that being slim was not a must for women to be deemed beautiful at the time. In fact, being voluptuous was seen to be the pinnacle of beauty at the time. The actress also admitted to being skinny-shamed at the time. She stated:
“Being skinny was not the standard of beauty in the 1990s, so voluptuousness was the standard of beauty.” I was told you weren’t a woman enough if you weren’t voluptuous, which you shouldn’t be. I think that body shaming should not be tolerated in our society, especially among young girls, given the concepts they are exposed to and the extreme dieting that is prevalent. People forget that it is not comprehensive.”
