With singles including “Who’s Your Daddy?” and “Made in America,” country artist Toby Keith rose to fame. He passed away at the age of 62 from stomach cancer.
His website carried a notice of his passing. Elaine Schock, Keith’s publicist, told the New York Times that the National Medal of Arts recipient passed away in Oklahoma, the state in which he was born and raised. In the summer of 2022, Keith made his initial announcement about his diagnosis of stomach cancer, mentioning that he was undergoing surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy at the time. A roller coaster is cancer. Keith said to Oklahoma City television station KWTV, “You just sit here and wait on it to go away; it may not ever go away,” according to the Times. He claimed that his cancer treatments were made easier by his Christian beliefs.
The American Cancer Society reports that almost 27,000 Americans are diagnosed with stomach cancer yearly, and it results in approximately 11,000 fatalities. The disease is more common in men than in women.

In 1961, working-class parents in Clinton, Oklahoma, gave birth to Keith as Toby Keith Covel. During his early years, he toiled in the oil fields of Oklahoma while honing his skills as a musician and songwriter for bands.

Keith didn’t sign his first record deal until he was well into his 30s, the Times noted. His big break came in 1993, when “Should Have Been a Cowboy” became Keith’s first No. 1 country single.
Over the following decades, Keith amassed 60 singles on the country charts, including 20 number-one hits. He sold more than 40 million albums worldwide and in 2015, he was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Keith is survived by his mother; his wife, Tricia (Lucus) Keith; two daughters, Shelley Covel and Krystal Sandubrae; a son, Stelen; a sister, Tonnie; a brother, Tracy; and four grandchildren.
