With the start of the National Basketball Association season next week, StubHub reports that ticket sales are up about 60% from last year, with the Los Angeles Lakers returning to the top of the list as the most in-demand club.
According to spokesperson Adam Budelli, the ticket exchange’s annual NBA preview lays down the company’s forecasts for the forthcoming basketball season based on years of data. The season begins on October 24.
Budelli told that all teams are experiencing a promising increase in demand this season, with foreign interest soaring. Fans from 92 countries are going to North American games, up 24 over previous season, he said. StubHub predicts that overseas sales will go up 120% from last season, with the most popular countries attending NBA games including Australia, the United Kingdom and Brazil.
“It’s hard to pinpoint one specific factor, but I would say across live events as a whole, we certainly have seen cross-border travel for live events increased and rebound to a higher point than when it was pre-pandemic,” Budelli stated.

The NBA has become increasingly dominated by international talents such as Nikola Joki of the Denver Nuggets, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks, and Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs. Similarly, the league’s foreign appeal will almost certainly figure into its next media rights discussions.

Budelli stated that the Lakers, led by superstars LeBron James and Anthony Davis, had been the top team in StubHub forecasts four times since 2017. The Denver Nuggets, last season’s NBA champions, are noticeable by their omission from the list, which Budelli said the business is tracking and expects to grow in popularity as the season unfolds.
He also mentioned that after Damian Lillard was moved to the already-powerful Milwaukee Bucks on Sept. 27, ticket sales more than doubled, with the team’s home opener likely to be the biggest selling game of the season. Budelli believes Lillard’s trade will be “the biggest mover” of the season, moving the team up six spots from last year.
According to StubHub, the Golden State Warriors, who recently acquired star guard Chris Paul to their high-scoring roster, have the highest average ticket price for their away game schedule.

Budelli stated that the Knicks would host five of the predicted top ten most popular games, more than any other team, as they trail the Lakers for first place. According to StubHub, the Knicks have outsold their previous season’s sales by 80%.
Still, Budelli cautioned that the projections are susceptible to change, and StubHub is eager to see how the clubs — and players — shape up as the season progresses.
“It definitely has the usual suspects on top, but as it goes, that can fluctuate and move throughout the season,” he said. “And there’s star players that break out and rookies and things like that, but it’s all there, and I think those trends speak for themselves.”
