Shilpi Kulshrestha, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Prean Organics in Gurugram, saw the advantages this spice has for health and began using it. “We started making turmeric pickles with an emphasis on boosting immunity during the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Kulshrestha of Happiest Health, this endeavor has been both a pleasant culinary adventure and an innovative method to use the spices that are full of health advantages.

Turmeric Pickles

Turmeric pickles is not your typical spice; in fact, curry frequently hails it as the dish’s standout ingredient. When people started combining it with milk, it also became an internet sensation known as golden milk. It is the solution to reducing inflammation, boosting immunity, and defending your health.

However, this is only the tip of the spice iceberg! Additionally, turmeric pickles enchants with a plethora of advantages, the core of which is its powerful antioxidant profile.

Because of its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics, turmeric has long been a staple in Indian cuisine and ayurvedic medicine, according to Varsha Abhishek, professional dietician and founder of Bengaluru’s Mekosha Nutrition and Yoga Studio.

Curcumin, turmeric’s main flavonoid, is responsible for many of its powerful therapeutic benefits. This crucial element is in charge of presenting the whole spectrum of advantages that this spice has to offer. Curcumin is a bioactive substance with a wide range of therapeutic benefits. According to Abhishek, it controls blood glucose levels, lowers cholesterol, promotes mental stability, and guards against oxidative damage.

You might be wondering how to include turmeric recipes in your diet. Worry not; we have got you covered with a simple recipe to incorporate this golden goodness. Moreover, most of the health benefits of turmeric can be found in this turmeric pickle as the preparation process involves minimal alteration.

Ingredients of turmeric pickles

  1. 1 cup fresh, cleaned and sliced yellow turmeric roots
  2. 1/4 cup finely chopped mango ginger (if available) or ginger (this can bring an extra flavour to the pickle)
  3. 8-10 long green chilies
  4. 2 lemons juiced – ¼ cup
  5. 2 tablespoons mustard oil
  6. 1 tablespoon rock salt
  7. ½ teaspoon asafoetida (hing)
  8. 1 tablespoon split mustard seed
  9. 1 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
  10. 2 tablespoons water
  11. 1 pinch sugar

How to make a pickle with turmeric

Peel the fresh turmeric root and ginger after giving them a thorough rinsing.
Let the turmeric steam for 20 minutes. Slice them into extremely tiny cubes once they have cooled (to prevent discoloration, use paper cooking gloves).
Remove the stems from the green chilies, then slice them into thin, half-inch slices. Slice the ginger ginger in small pieces.
Fenugreek and mustard seeds should be lightly toasted in a frying pan for one to two minutes. After allowing them to cool, carefully smash them.

In an other frying pan, warm the mustard oil. Salt, asafoetida, asafoetida powder, and crushed mustard and fenugreek seeds are added to the oil. Turn the stove off.
Add the chopped ginger, turmeric, and green chilies to it as well. Water is added in 2 teaspoons. Blend the ingredients completely.
Allow the mixture to totally cool. Lemon juice and a small amount of sugar are then added.
Put it in an airtight glass container and store it somewhere dry for two days.
Enjoy your homemade pickle of turmeric!

Note: Mustard oil and a pure lemon infusion should be used instead of vinegar for best effects.

Precautions 

The regular usage of a few bits of turmeric is perfectly safe. Although turmeric is generally used in very modest amounts as a spice in a variety of culinary applications, it has had negative side effects when used as a supplement or for medical purposes. To prevent negative side effects, experts advise that you should always speak with a healthcare provider before taking turmeric/curcumin pills.
