Rescuers reached 41 workers trapped in the Uttarkashi tunnel since November 12, capping up a 400-hour mission. As the rescue attempt suffered setback after setback, it was a test of grit and perseverance for men on both sides of the 57-metre-high rubble. After the drilling machine failed, it was miners who dug the final 12 metres to reach the trapped men.
Around 8 p.m., the first worker was extracted and transferred to a medical facility in an ambulance. Along with Union Minister of State General (Retd) VK Singh, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami met with the rescued workers.

A makeshift medical facility has been established up inside the tunnel as part of the ongoing rescue operation. This facility will conduct a health check-up after the workers have been evacuated. In the case of an emergency, the health department has prepared 8 beds and a team of doctors and experts to provide urgent aid.

What are doctors at AIIMS Rishikesh planning for the Uttarakhand tunnel rescue?

With all of the workers stuck in the Silkyara-Barkot tunnel in Uttarkashi steadily making their way out, doctors at AIIMS Rishikesh are preparing to treat any health complications that may arise. Doctors will be on the watch for signs of emaciation and dehydration because they had been in forcible captivity, packed together in an enclosed location with food shortages and lifeline supplies. According to specialists, there is a risk of illness spreading in such settings if basic hygiene is not practiced. However, the most serious issue is likely to be post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which will necessitate close monitoring in the days following.

“We don’t know when they’ll arrive, but it won’t be at night.” The immediate care they require will be provided in the tunnel’s temporary facility. They will be sent here for further treatment, however,” said Dr. Meenu Singh, Director of AIIMS-Rishikesh. She stated that the hospital anticipates minor orthopedic injuries.

Uttarakhand Tunnel Rescue Operation Live Updates: Silkyara Tunnel Rescue Timeline

  • Due to a landslide on November 12, 41 workmen were trapped within the tunnel under construction at Silkyara on the Yamunotri Highway in Uttarkashi district.
  • After receiving information about the incident, the rescue mission was launched. SDRF personnel from Dehradun assisted with the rescue, as did local police and district government.
  • A JCB was initially sent to remove debris from the tunnel, but it was unsuccessful due to debris falling from above, therefore an auger machine was summoned from Dehradun and drilling began in the tunnel.
  • This equipment also failed because the rebar was revealed after roughly 50 meters of tunnel excavation. The plasma cutter was then summoned from Hyderabad.
  • On the 16th day, after cutting the auger with the cutter, manual digging began, and today, on the 17th day, the operation was eventually successful as rescuers reached the trapped workers inside the tunnel.
  • Many organizations, officers, and employees participated in the rescue operation, including the NDRF, SDRF, BRO, RVNL, SJVNL, ONGC, ITBP, NHAIDCL, THDC, Uttarakhand State Government, District Administration, Indian Army, and Air Force.
