Read on to find out why the host of The View Whoopi Goldberg skipped the premiere of The Colour Purple.
Blitz Bazawule’s 2023 rendition of “The Colour Purple” hit theatres on December 25. The London premiere of the coming-of-age musical historical drama film took place on November 20. It features a slew of A-listers, including Taraji P. Henson and Halle Bailey. A unexpected cameo appearance was made by Whoopi Goldberg, who played Celie in the 1985 picture. Speculation about a potential dispute between the presenter of The View and Oprah Winfrey, who produced the 2023 version, began when she was noticeably missing from the film’s premiere.
Reasons for Whoopi Goldberg’s decision not to attend the Colour Purple debut
Though she had a pivotal part in Steven Spielberg’s 1985 film adaptation of The Colour Purple, the 68-year-old American comic chose not to attend promotional events for the sequel. Though many thought Oprah and Whoopi Goldberg were feuding, which would explain her absence.
“The View is pissed that Oprah avoided The View,” a source told Page Six, alluding to the TV host’s choice to promote her newest rendition of Alice Walker’s The Colour Purple rather than the long-running programme.
But the filmmaker discussed the film’s whys and wherefores with the Los Angeles Times, explaining why Whoopi Goldberg chose not to attend the premiere. “We had discussed it briefly in her trailer, and Whoopi said, ‘I’m just here to pass the baton,'” Blitz said.
“Some people aren’t as understanding as she is when it comes to recognising that ‘The Colour Purple’ is truly the main attraction here,” he went on to say, before emphasising how amazing it was to know they have her approval to go with this rendition.
“We had to stop and laugh because of everything she did, and you forget that she comes from stand up [comedy],” Blitz recounted shooting Whoopi’s appearance. The most important thing, however, is the love and care she showed Phylicia.
“It was symbolic not only because Whoopi represents ‘The Colour Purple’ canon, but what Whoopi represents, period – the juggernaut that she is, and the doors she kicked open,” he concluded.
Whoopi Goldberg
On November 13, 1955, in the Chelsea neighbourhood of Manhattan, Whoopi Goldberg’s mother, Caryn Elaine Johnson, came into this world. Robert James Johnson, Jr. was a minister, and Emma (Harris) was a schoolteacher and nurse. Whoopi’s family tree has recently included members from Virginia, Georgia, and Florida. She had little roles on Broadway and also worked as a bricklayer and at a funeral home. After relocating to California, she honed her stand-up comedy chops and performed with improv groups like Spontaneous Combustion. An HBO special and Goldberg’s one-woman act as Moms Mabley catapulted her to stardom. Throughout her successful career, she has been recognised as an exceptional performer who is both socially aware and vocally liberal. Frank Langella and Ted Danson were among her lovers. Goldberg has a history of drug addiction and was married three times.
Hollywood has recognised Whoopi as a one-of-a-kind, very visible talent. She was a mainstay at almost every Comic Relief benefit performance, so maybe that’s another reason she’ll be remembered for all time. Not only that, Whoopi is the main character in Hollywood Squares (1998), she sometimes presents the Academy Awards, and she has written a book titled “Book.”
