Biopics, the most recent trend in Bollywood filmmaking, offer a more detailed and intimate portrayal of a person’s life than written biographies. Clearly, the makers of biopics conduct extensive research on the celebrity on whom the film is based. Many celebrities from various fields, including sports and social activism, have been cast in biopics.
1. Mahendra Singh Dhoni charged Rs. 45 crores from his biopic, M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story
Captain cool, often known as Mahendra Singh Dhoni is one of India’s most iconic cricketers. M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, his biopic, premiered in 2016. It was directed by the renowned filmmaker Neeraj Panday. The film was directed by the late actor Sushant Singh Rajput, who played the cricketer. According to reports, the cricketer charged the biopic’s writer a hefty Rs. 45 crores.

2. Acid attack survivor Laxmi Aggarwal received Rs. 13 lakhs for her biopic, Chhapak
Laxmi Aggarwal is an Indian acid assault survivor, social activist, and television broadcaster. While her inspirational life story would have gone unrecorded until 2020, when filmmaker Meghna Gulzar produced her movie, Chhapak. Deepika Padukone played Laxmi’s role. Laxmi demanded Rs. 13 lakhs for the film’s motion picture rights.
3. Paan Singh Tomar’s nephew accepted Rs. 15 lakhs for the former’s biopic
Paan Singh Tomar was an Indian soldier and well-known athlete. He served in the Indian Army and represented India in the 1958 Asian Games. He eventually rose to prominence as a rebel in the Chambal valley, resorting to violence over a land quarrel. Years later, in 2012, a biopic about him was directed by the late actor Irrfan Khan. According to reports, Paan Singh Tomar’s then-living nephew agreed to pay Rs. 15 lakhs in royalties for the biography.
4. Milka Singh received Rs. 1 for his biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
Milkha Singh, often known as ‘The Flying Sikh’, was a well-known Indian sprinter and athlete. He received numerous distinctions and achievements. While many knew him well, it wasn’t until 2013 that his biopic, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, was released to make the athlete’s story more widely known. While Farhan Khan was cast in the important part, the sportsman only received Re. 1 in exchange for giving up ownership of the film.
5. Sanjay Dutt received Rs. 9-10 crores for his biopic, Sanju
Sanjay Dutt is one of Bollywood’s most brilliant performers. In 1981, he debuted with the picture Rocky. Aside from his acting profession, he was briefly involved in a major case after being arrested under the TADA Act in 1993, following the Mumbai explosions. Ranbir Kapoor portrayed the actor in his biopic, Sanju, released in 2018. Sanjay Dutt charged a hefty fee of Rs. 9 to 10 crores for the rights to the film.

6. Sachin Tendulkar has earned Rs. 40 crores for his biopic, Sachin: A Billion Dreams
Sachin Tendulkar, dubbed the ‘Masterblaster,’ is one of India’s most celebrated cricketers. While his talent in the field is well recognized, it was his biopic, Sachin-A Billion Dreams, released in 2017, that allowed the audience to get to know the great better. For this, the cricketer received a hefty sum of Rs. 40 crores from the film’s producers.
7. Mohammad Azharuddin did not charge anything for his biography, Azhar
Mohammad Azharuddin is one of India’s most known cricketers. The right-handed hitter appeared in 99 test matches throughout his career. However, in 2000, his cricketing career was cut short when he was banned for life by the BCCI for his alleged involvement in a match-fixing scam. In 2016, Emran Hashmi starred in Azharuddin’s biography Azhar. However, he did not charge anything for it.
8. Mary Kom charged Rs. 25 lakhs for her biography
Priyanka Chopra directed the biopic of ace boxer Mary Kom in 2014. The diva worked hard to put herself in the athlete’s shoes. The boxer reportedly charged Rs. 25 lakhs for leasing the film’s rights.
